THE JAMES P. AND SHIRLEY J. O'BRIEN ENDOWMENT COMPOSITION COMPETITION FOR UASTEEL AND CROSSTALK
KAT Artist Dr. Norman Weinberg, director of Percussion studies at the University of Arizona, describes the project as follows:
In recent years, the steel drum has experienced a huge increase in popularity. Steel bands have been formed in school programs at all levels (primary school through university) and in community centers around the country. This has resulted in renewed interest in both the indigenous instruments and the oral traditions of music learning and music making. The project is a joint partnership between the University of Arizona Groups, UA Steel and CrossTalk, the University of Arizona Electronic Percussion Group.
To that end, the Project is sponsoring a composition competition that will create:
... an interactive media work that features the Steel Band with CrossTalk. This new work will feature the sounds, techniques, and cultural symbolisms of traditional instruments within the framework of a high technology musical accompaniment.
Dr. Weinberg has asked us to formally extend an invitation to the KAT community for compositions for this competition.
In addition to a featured performance at the PAS/Arizona Day of Percussion, the following prize money will be awarded:
- 1st prize: $2,500
- 2nd prize: $1,000
- 3rd prize: $500
