Christopher Sean "Pow Pow" Powell is a drummer, composer and producer living in Philadelphia, PA.
His work as a main contributor in the Philadelphia art and sound collective Need New Body, which fused improvisation with popular song structures, started a career of international recording and performance. Since 1999, he has collaborated and toured worldwide with multiple artists, including the Sun Ra Arkestra and the Boredoms, for their 77 and 88 BOADRUM performances in New York, NY and Los Angeles, CA. He is half of the Chicago/Los Angeles duo Icy Demons, writing and producing popular music based on jazz and non-Western rhythms with Griffin Rodriguez. Recently, his work in the eclectic and high energy Philadelphia band Man Man (ANTI Records) has helped focus his talent as a leader in the live performance context.
A self taught musician, Powell has since studied jazz, improvisation and music from around the world. He is currently focusing his work towards audio production, sound collage and electronic composition. In addition to scoring musical compositions for short films and documentaries, Powell’s first solo project, Spaceship Aloha, launches in 2013. Powell currently teaches percussion and drumming in his Philadelphia studio and is an active studio musician, dividing his time between Philadelphia, New York City, and Los Angeles.
