Danny Gottlieb is one of the most popular drummers in jazz and contemporary music. While best known as the drummer in the original Pat Metheny Group, Danny,for the past 35 years, has performed and recorded with some of the greatest musicians in the world. They include:
Gil Evans, Sting, Bobby McFerrin, John Mclaughlin, Gary Burton, Steve Swallow, Carla Bley, Maria Schneider, Bob Brookmeyer, Manny Album, Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, The Manhattan Transfer, the Blues Brothers Band, Booker T and the MG's, Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan, Mike Stern, John Scofield, Jim Hall, Lew Soloff, Jeff Berlin, Randy Brecker, Eliane Elias, Mike Maniari, The NDR (Hamburg) Big Band, the WDR (Cologne) Big Band,The George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band, the GRP Big Band, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Chuck Owen's Jazz Surge, Wayne Shorter, Steve Gray, and many more. He is featured on more than 350 cds to date, including four Grammy Award winners.
Danny had been a student of the late jazz drumming legend, Joe Morello for more than 40 years. He also studied with Ed Soph, Mel Lewis, Gary Chester, and Jack DeJohnette. Danny is also an Associate Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville (firstname.lastname@example.org). He recently authored a text, The Evolution of Jazz Drumming (Hudson Music, 2011), which was awarded the Best in Show award at the Summer 2011 National Association of Music Merchandisers Convention in Nashville.
In addition to jazz performances, and his teaching responsibilities, Danny and his percussionist wife Beth are members of actor/bassist Gary Sinise's Lt Dan band (ltdanband.com). Together they perform about 40 concerts per year, mostly as benefit concerts for the Military and the USO. The group performed in Afghanistan during Thanksgiving, 2009.
No stranger to electronic percussion, Danny has been a Kat endorser for 20 years, and has performed frequently using the Trap Kat and Drum Kat for concert performances around the world, including many University and Percussive Arts Society International Convention appearances.
