How Spammers Killed a forum
« on: July 13, 2011, 11:22:11 AM »
Without at least a weekly visit by our moderators, you can tell by the frequent posts , spammers take over, and pollute it. Can we have someone get their email addresses, an lets return the favor? This sux, I liked coming here every other day, and will continue to do so-but it is irritating.
Anyone else want to weigh in on this without viagra, or useless non-AM related news?
Apologies for the pissed off attitude.

peace to all Kat's- and FU to spammers!! :-\

Having a forum like this is certainly quite a responsibility - and it does reflect badly if it's polluted all the time.  I don't think you can run a successful forum these days without at least daily monitoring, spammer levels are so bad.  You either have to clear the crap down or you need something like "moderated first post" for new users (and be harsh on whether to allow that post!).  Any spam that does get in is best left alone - if they've embedded [ img] links, you're calling unknown services and racking them up $$ like they want.  So check the list of new posts and simply don't read the spam.  I've got the point of checking out any new posters who reply in existing threads, too - anyone with a dodgy signature gets ignored, too.  And I *STILL* get caught out.

I thought there was software to hold the bots at bay. As well as registering techniques.

This may be the only forum I go to now that is saturated. All the others seem to have controls over this problem.

You've not been on the Analogue Drums' site, then...  I've had to nag them on Facebook to clear it up a few times...

And even with CAPTCHA (?sp), I've seen spam getting onto sites I use regularly.  It needs active human intervention to keep up with.  It's so sad people do it, though...

PLJ
you are probably the most prevalent and active here, maybe Mr Mario could bestow upon you the title of moderator...
 ;D
of course, if you'd be willing to take on the job, that is.

it sounds like I'm kidding, but with as busy as Mario is, maybe someone COULD pitch in and help out

That would mean having to read all the crap to make sure it's really spam though... *huff*...  Or I could just delete anything from people I don't recognise.  Who's this gmbydmit, now..?  Delete... delete... delete...

Actually, I've had friends who run discussion boards tell me it isn't that difficult. Especially with a dedicated registering process with proprietary info. If each new member has to pass by an administrator first, then they know who is legit and who is not right off the bat. No instant membership. Some bots may pass through, but it's a lot easier to control. Otherwise these guys would go nuts trying to keep it all out. I used to moderate a board, and man, it was a task. Up to two hundred+ a day. Then the guy who ran it told me I could mass wipe out stuff. What a difference that made. I never had to look at a single thread. I did it all from his control center.

If you want to see how over-zealous moderation can kill a forum, check the naturaldrum site...  You can't join, post, reply or anything without the owner checking it out; he updates once every month or so, the place looks dead, so no one gets involved... so the place looks dead.

I do like the idea of an initial check.  Ideally, I think the best way is to allow anyone to join, kill the account if they've not posted in a month (particularly on a site where you don't need to join to read), first post goes for moderation and the account gets killed if it's spam, taking all pending messages with it.  Once they've passed that, they just have to post once in a while to avoid the account getting purged and starting over (to avoid password breach attacks).  Now, if that could be wrapped into a control panel app, mods/admins would be happy! :)

(Maybe I have a PHP project...)

I don't get here as often as I used to....only so many hours in the day.. ;)
I've always thought it was a shame that this forum was so polluted with spam, and, no apparent way to kill it off.
Like someone else said, don't open anything....who knows what you'll be letting yourself in for.

Might be worth getting someone in the office to check new posts once or twice a day:
http://alternatemode.com/forum/index.php?action=unread;all

You can usually spot the spammers... (usually).
